Fundraising Idea Spotlight - Camping Cookbook
One of the all time favorite past times of people around the
world is camping. There are many groups like YMCA, Boy
Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and 4-H among many
others.
I hope that you are thinking what I'm thinking. That perhaps
there are tens of millions of people that like to camp and
support camping activities for their children. This
translates
to people buying cookbooks specifically written for camping.
If your organization is slightly connected to camping, then
a
Camping Cookbook will be a fundraiser and a
friend-raiser
for your group. First select a committee that will
concentrate
on putting together unique recipes and publishing the book.
Call your book something unique or concentrate on a specific
type of camp cooking. What about
Tarzan's Family
Cooking
Secrets
for a name. You get the picture...make it
unique and
tantalizing. What about
Roasting Boasting for a specialty
book on roasting techniques.
Sell your book online also, with some good e-book services.
I've put together a web page for
e-book publishing that you
might want to access.
Get some squeaky clean cash by selling Bath Products. I've
found two companies that have some great "One-of-A-Kind
fundraising products that can't be found in local stores.
This will be great for those wanting more than buying candy
bars, popcorn and cookies. These products are custom made
and even allow private labeling where you place your groups
name on the label.
Products available include candles, essential oils, lotions,
soaps, facial care, foot care products and aromatherapy. Some
of the soaps can be made into selected shapes that perhaps
reflect a little bit about your organization. Some of the
scents include Lavender, Patchouli, Watermellon, Cotton Candy,
Peppermint, Peach, Lemon Meringue, Evening Royalty, Rose,
Sandalwood, Vanilla, and Citrus.
With President George Bush's push on faith-based
organizations, there has been renewed interest in applying
for U.S. government grants. There are numerous programs
that are put in place to serve certain segments of the
population.
I won't go into the parameters of whether a faith-based
organization should take on the chance of government
involvement with their nonprofit. Many nonprofits will not
consider taking money from government sources for fear that
the government will dictate policies that are not compatible
with their mission statement.
Find out if your organization can apply for grants that are
offered. Here are a few places to search for.
P. Burke Keegan has a unique ability of digging deep into why
a nonprofit organization exists. Does your group have a
vision? What does it wants to accomplish? What is the dream
that your organization wants to accomplish? How much of that
dream can be carried out?
The author forces you to consider making a blueprint for
success. Similar to a business plan, Keegan believes a
blueprint is at the heart of getting your group to fulfilling
it's most basic mission.
Although, the book reads more like an academic discussion than
conversational in tone, it still makes you think whether you
are steering your nonprofit in the right direction. It is
very
oriented to offering suggestions on grassroots fundraising for
those new to the fundraising world.
It even provides ideas if you are one of those that are shy in
asking for funds. I sure could have used this book when I was
raising money for the Boy Scouts years ago (I was shy at first
too - but got cured of that real quick). I will have to give
this book a 4 (on a scale of 5). I believe it is currently
on sale for 30% off down to about $12.50.
