Fundraising Idea Spotlight - Phone-A-Thons
There are several ways of raising money over the phone.
Let's
look at a few.
The Pledge Loss Call -- "Mr. Smith
I'm calling you tonight
from our ____________ headquarters where I've volunteered
to help make a few phone calls. Mr. Smith, we are trying
to wind our year down and are calling our faithful supporters
to secure our final year-end gifts and update all of our
records. (restate their address and ask if this is correct)
Will you need a returnable envelope for your convenience in
sending in your final support payment?" This method involves
calling those that actually made a pledge earlier in the year.
Selling A Product -- You are selling
candy products or tickets
to your annual concert or fair. You will probably contact
supporters that have bought items from you in the past and
may not have hooked up with you yet this year. They may
be
anxiously awaiting someone to contact them again and offer
that special product or event ticket.
Phone-A-Buddy -- Calling a friend
and asking for help is
always a great way to add supporters to your ranks.
Basically, you recruit as many supporters that agree to call
a friend or buddy and discuss the need for thier financial
assistance to your group.
Music & Sound Company has a program that allows you to sell
your own music for profit.
Basically, you're school, church or organization makes a
recording of your music you wish to sell. The cost of your
CD is significantly less expensive than a typical store
bought recording. This allows you to sell your own specific
recordings for profit at what normal CD's sell for.
This is a great fundraiser if you have a fairly large
following
of parents, grandparents and community supporters. Music
and Sound has helped hundreds of nonprofit groups create their
own special music and are very flexible with the technical
aspects of making a recording and packaging it for you.
Book Review - RelationShift: Revolutionary
Fundraising
Michael Bassoff and Steve Chandler have recently released
this new book in November 2001.
This book is mostly about exposing the many myths of
fundraising. Two of these myths are the standard ones that
you see all of the time. I'm talking about.... 1. Big Money
Comes from Big Companies, 2. It Takes Money to Raise Money,
3. We've Got to Get the Word Out about our fundraiser.
I think these are commonly known myths, but the authors put
a new spin on them. They also highlight other myths not as
commonly known that you will want to learn about.
Then there are the so-called myths that I can't imagine
anybody really believing. One is "Only Rich People Can Help
You". I bet if I polled you in your fundraising efforts you
would probably say that most of your gifts are in-kind or a
large portion come from $20's $50's, $100's and the like.
From what I've read and understood in this book, some of the
ideas are 180 degrees from what you would normally think you
must do to raise money. This is good since it gets one to
rethink their efforts at present.
I give this book a 3.5 (on a scale of 5), because of the more
commonly known myths that they seem to restate. The book
is especially helpful to those that are just now getting into
fundraising. If this is you, then this is the book for you.
